CONFESSIONS OF BUSINESS LAZARUS #34:You Must Be Aware of the Threat You Pose to the Ambition of Others

đź’ˇ Leadership Lesson from Dove Media
One of the hardest lessons I learned during my time at Dove Media was understanding the silent tension that often surrounds leadership — the threat your success can pose to the ambitions of others.
As a leader, you might think that doing the right thing, working hard, and maintaining integrity will earn you respect and loyalty. But sometimes, your very presence, progress, or proximity to power can unintentionally intimidate others who aspire to your position.
It’s not always jealousy — it’s ambition. And ambition, when unchecked, can quietly turn allies into rivals.
🕊️ When I Stepped into Leadership
When I became the CEO of Dove Media, a company owned by the church, I was optimistic. I believed that within a God-centered environment, there would be no place for power struggles or politics.
But I was wrong.
Many senior pastors in The Redeemed Christian Church of God had long been managing separate arms of the church’s media — recordings, broadcasts, publications, and more. When all those departments were merged under Dove Media, it disrupted their territories. Suddenly, my appointment as CEO — a role I didn’t even lobby for — became a lightning rod for unspoken tension.
Some leaders believed they were more qualified for the position. Others simply didn’t want to lose control of their long-established domains. What I thought was unity was, in truth, a collision of ambitions.
⚡ The Hidden Politics I Failed to See
In my early days, I assumed everyone shared the same goal — to grow the organization and glorify God. I didn’t realize that my leadership symbolized loss for others. My efforts to consolidate and coordinate the church’s media inadvertently encroached on the ambitions of those who had their own visions and influence.
Even more surprising was discovering that some of my own team members — people I had personally appointed — secretly aspired to my role. My openness made me vulnerable. My assumption that “church people don’t play politics” blinded me to the reality that ambition exists everywhere — even in sacred spaces.
🔥 When Access Becomes Envy
Another source of resentment was my direct access to the General Overseer (GO). While I saw it as a privilege to serve, others saw it as power. Every meeting I had with the GO became fuel for envy among those who had long desired such access.
I failed to recognize how that relationship appeared from the outside. My innocence was mistaken for arrogance, and my proximity to leadership became a symbol of exclusion for others.
By the time I realized what was happening, it was too late. I had underestimated how deeply ambition runs in every organization — secular or spiritual.
🧠Leadership Awareness Is Your Shield
Here’s what I learned:
Leadership is not just about vision — it’s about vigilance. You must understand that every position of power casts a shadow. In that shadow are people whose ambitions, insecurities, or frustrations may one day collide with yours.
That doesn’t mean becoming paranoid or distrustful. It means being strategically aware. Recognize that your appointment might threaten others — some knowingly, some unconsciously.
👉 Be wise, be discerning, and never assume your good intentions protect you from others’ ambitions.
đź’Ž Key Lessons for Every Leader
âś… 1. Leadership attracts ambition. The higher you rise, the more you challenge the aspirations of others.
✅ 2. Awareness is protection. Know who’s around you and what drives them.
âś… 3. Influence creates envy. Manage your relationships with balance and discretion.
âś… 4. Naivety is costly. Learn the unspoken dynamics of your environment early.
✅ 5. Even faith-based spaces have politics. Don’t confuse spirituality with immunity from human ambition.
🕯️ Final Thought: Lead with Wisdom and Guarded Grace
Leadership, whether in business, ministry, or community, is a sacred responsibility. But it’s also a battlefield of ambitions.
If you’re called to lead, understand this truth — your success will inspire some and intimidate others. Walk humbly, but stay alert. Every privilege, every decision, every conversation can be misinterpreted.
Lead with wisdom.
Serve with integrity.
And never forget — awareness is not fear; it’s foresight.
✨ Quote for Reflection:
“Every light casts a shadow. The wise leader learns to manage both.”
